4TH PLACE AT STATE!
What a GREAT team performance! Emily Smith finished 16th to capture her first all-state award and to lead the team. Britney Weizeorick (45th), Grace Carballo (56th), Grace Yang (68th) and Adrienne Schertz (70th) completed the scoring for the Huskies, who finished in the top four statewide for the third consecutive year. Team captains Jamie Schertz and Joanna Brodecki completed the team effort for the team. While their races may not have ended exactly how they would have liked, it was their and the rest of the captains' leadership this year that allowed us to grow and develop in spite of several injury and health-related issues. We would not be here without our seniors' leadership. Thanks so much to them. What we saw at State was why cross country is a team sport. With the weather being about 35 degrees warmer than sectionals, it was definitely an unexpected challenge. But meeting unexpected challenges is what separates the great from the merely good. Congratulations to everyone on a tremensous season!
St. Charles East Sectional
Sectional Runners-Up and it's Off to State!
The team finished a scant three points shy of Wheaton Warrenville South to finish second at sectionals on Saturday. Emily Smith ran a tremendous race to finish second overall and Jamie Schertz (9th) joined her in the top ten. Britney Weizeorick (16th), Grace Carballo (20th), and Adrienne Schertz (22nd) completed the scoring effort for the team. Joanna Brodecki and Grace Yang both ran excellent races to complete the entire team effort. The race was once again run in rugged, muddy conditions that slowed times considerably. We are beginning to run our best races of the year, so we hope to have many teammates, alums, parents and friends down to see us through this final step of a WONDERFUL 2009 campaign! We'll see you in Peoria on Saturday!
Naperville North Regional
Regional Runners-Up
For the second week, the team finished second to Wheaton Warrenville South. This time, it was in a tight race on a very muddy course at DuPage River Park. Emily Smith ran and excellent race to lead the team in 4th place overall. Jamie Schertz was 5th, Britney Weizeorick was 9th, Grace Carballo 10th and Joanna Brodecki was 15th to complete the scoring. Adrienne Schertz was 16th and Marly May 17th to complete the team effort. Congratulations to everyone on a tremendous team effort on a very tough day.
Wheaton North Flight Meet
Wheaton North Flight Champions!
At the Wheaton North Flight Meet on Saturday, the team ran extremely well at every level! At the varsity level, the team eked out a one-point victory over an excellent York High School team that also appeared to have an excellent day. Run in flights, there were seven separate races. The Huskies won four of the seven flights as Marly May won the 6th flight, Britney Weizeorick won the 5th, Adrienne Schertz won the 4th and Emily Smith won the 2nd. Christina Rei finished a close second in the 7th flight and Joanna Brodecki was 3rd in the 3rd flight. In the Championship Flight, Jamie Schertz finished 15th to complete the team scoring. Success at this meet depends on every runner competing well, as all seven flights count. At Northside Park on Saturday, every runner definitely compted very well!
In the Open Races, the team scores were not kept, but had they been, the Freshmen would have emerged victorious. The JV team and the sophomores also did extremely well. In the freshman race, Grace Carballo, Lizzie Deely and Caroline Power finished 3-4-6 to lead the effort. In the sophomore race, Emma Shannon used an amazing last half of her race to finish 6th overall. In the JV race, Julie Carroll overcame a severe cramp in the last 400m of her race and finished 3rd overall. She led a team effort that included Melissa Crawford in 8th and Alex Wernette in 14th.

Varsity, JV Second at Pleasant Valley
F/S Wins!
Jamie Schertz' 7th place finish in the varsity race led the varsity team to a 2nd place finish at the Pleasant Valley Invitational. The team finished second to a strong effort by an excellent Iowa City High School team. Jamie was followed by Joanna Brodecki (10th), Christina Rei (13th), Britney Weizeorick (15th), and Marly May (20th) as the scoring runners. Julie Carroll (21st) and Adrienne Schertz (22nd) completed the team effort.
In the Freshman/Sophomore Race, Emily Smith won the race and shattered the course record with a 15:45 effort on the 4K course. She was followed in a 1-2-3 sweep by Lizzie Deely and Grace Carballo. Kimber Meyer (6th) and Natalie Arturo (13th) completed the scoring for the freshman/sophomores. As an aside, together with the depth shown by the varsity, the team put NINE runners under 16 minutes for the difficult 4K course. We have never even had all seven under 16 before, so this is quite an accomplishment!
In the JV race, the team was bested by City High by a single point! Alex Wernette came within a fraction of a second of winning the race, as she and Anne Herbert finished 2-4 to lead the JV squad. Melissa Crawford (5th), Dana Campbell (10th), and Biz Bell (12th) completed the team effort. Congratulations to EVERYONE at all levels on really fantastic races to begin the year! We are very proud of you, and we expect more and better things as we proceed to Detweiller Park next Saturday!

Huskies Sweep the Naperville Invite Despite Wrong Turns, MUD!
The team swept all levels at the nine-team Naperville Invite on Friday night at DuPage River Park. Soggy from a steady afternoon of rain, the course proved to be more muddy as the afternoon progressed, but excellent performances abounded at all levels. Jamie Schertz led the varsity to victory with her 4th place finish in an excellent field. Emily Smith (7th), Joanna Brodecki (9th), Grace Yang (13th) and Adrienne Schertz (14th) completed the scoring for the varsity. Marly May and Britney Weizeorick finished 21st and 33rd to complete the team effort.
At the Freshman/Sophomore level, Grace Carballo and Lizzie Deely finished 1-2 to lead that team to a victory. Caroline Power, Emma Shannon, and Natalie Arturo completed the team scoring in that race. In the JV race, Julie Carroll's 2nd place finish (after a significant wrong turn that was the fault of course markings that had long since worn off in the rain) keyed that team's victory. Anne Herbert, Melissa Crawford, Alex Wernette and Biz Bell all scored for the JV team in their victory.
Varsity Second, JV Champions at Peoria Woodruff
The varsity ran a little bit shorthanded at the Peoria Woodruff today, but came away with an impressive performance nonetheless. The team used a 21-second 1-5 split to earn a solid second place finish in the 36-team field. Joanna Brodecki led the way for the team with a 17th place finish. She was followed by freshman Emily Smith in her first varsity race (22nd). The team scoring was completed by Marly May (26th), Adrienne Schertz (28th), and Julie Carroll (29th). Britney Weizeorick (37th) and Christina Rei (82nd) completed the team effort.
At the JV level, Grace Carballo (2nd) and Lizzie Deely (3rd) led five Huskies in the top thirteen to score a convincing victory. They were followed by Melissa Crawford (10th), Anne Herbert (12th) and Kimber Meyer (13th) in the race. The results show each of these athletes one place ahead of this, but the results do not include the winner, who was mistakenly sent on another loop of the Detweiller course.
